Southside Housing Association awarded McGill a £3.3M Design & Build contract to replace the existing gas fired boilers, distribution pipe work and radiators in 5 multi storey blocks, with a total of 219 properties as the existing systems were inefficient and expensive to maintain as they were reaching the end of their life expectancy.

The existing boiler house was located in the basement of each multi storey block, so we installed the new boiler house on the roof, allowing us to have the new systems fully operational before isolating the existing systems, so the tenants never lost heating or hot water during the work, other than for the one day when the changeover took place.

In each of the 5 roof top plant rooms, we installed high efficiency gas fired boilers manufactured by Remeha, pumps and pressurisation unites manufactured by Grundfos and a buffer vessel manufactured by McCallum Calorifier. The equipment was controlled from a DELTA BMS installed by our preferred sub-contractor Craigalan Controls Limited.

The gas supply to the boiler houses was fixed vertically to the structure of the multi storey block and encased in the external wall insulation. On the roof, the pipe was supported on a `big foot` system and run horizontally, terminating in each of the boiler houses.

Vertical and horizontal heating distribution pipe work from the boiler house to the heat interface unit installed in each of the properties was installed using carbon steel pipe work and fittings with crimped joints, then fully insulated used phenolic foam insulation.

Within each property we installed traditional copper pipe work to serve the central heating and hot water systems and renewed all of the old column radiators with modern steel panel radiators.

As part of the work, we also replaced the existing cold water storage tanks in each multi storey block.

Our works commenced in October 2012 and we successfully achieved completion in December 2013.
