McGill were appointed by Dundee College with support from iPower Energy Consultants to provide a roof mounted solar PV work package at their Kingsway Campus.
The main objective for this project was to introduce renewable energy sources into the campus which will provide a model for educational purposes as well as reducing costs and the carbon foot print for the College.
As principal contractor we had to be suitably qualified with MCS accreditation to design and build a 2 x 50kWP solar PV system.
The PV system was to consist of a 400 panel array with tier 1 approved 250w polycrystalline panels. The panels were roof mounted using standing seem clamps with a Schletter frame work system.
To carry out these works safely we were required to devise a suitable scaffold system and a man safe system with use of harnesses, inertia reels and wire anchor points. Safety exclusion zones were also in place to reduce risks when working on the roof top.
Our responsibilities included lodging the appropriate G59 DNO applications and on completion of work testing and commissioning the complete systems including G59 relay switchgear and arranging DNO witnessing of the relay units and settings.
Another responsibility was to arrange Energy Performance Certificates for the College. This was a complex and time consuming exercise due mainly to the number of standalone buildings and varying ages of the infrastructure and services on the campus.
Monitoring the system was achieved using SolarFox 500, with the aid of a 32” flat screen monitor mounted in the College Main Reception area. All College users could see how the system was operating.
To operate this system we connected into the colleges IT system via a hard wire data box linked to our SMA inverters via a blue tooth connection. We also linked this into the Building Managers computer to allow him the facility to monitor the solar PV systems.
