McGill "Highly Commended" Employer of the Year at the CITB Apprenticeship Awards
McGill have finished in the top three in the Employer of the Year Scotland Category, achieving "Highly Commended" status, at the CITB Apprenticeship Awards.
McGill were shortlisted in the top 10 in Scotland from countless entries and were then awarded a Golden Ticket to attend the Awards Ceremony at the IndigO2 in London on Wednesday 6 November.
Juliet McGill, Marketing Director, and Silvie Gowans, HR Officer, attended and received the award from William Burton, Interim Chief Executive for CITB and TV Presenter Ben Fogle, who was hosting and guest speaker.
This is the first year the awards have been held. The judges based their nominations on the number of apprentices and total employees, the Company’s policy towards employing apprentices, details of their apprentice programme, commitment to training and other exceptional interventions or support demonstrated towards the success and wellbeing of their apprentices.
The submission outlined that they employ 63 Apprentices as part of their 450 strong work force. It is their policy to endeavour to offer apprenticeships to at least 10% of their workforce year on year and they are committed to hiring Apprentices through local Partnerships which have been established over time, thereby showing commitment to the local community and not just taking from mainstream candidates.
In 2012 they introduced their own pre-evaluation scheme to help bring on candidates who showed potential to be developed and provided an opportunity to ensure they recruit only those who have a desire and passion to join construction, having experienced a year within the industry. It ensures the good candidates are fully prepared for the next year apprenticeship intake when they are re-interviewed. The scheme has proven extremely beneficial and out of the six taken on under the scheme, five have been hired for the 2013 intake.
McGill also started a Mentoring Scheme in 2012 and to date have trained more than 12 Mentors through the CITB training scheme. The purpose of the scheme is to allow the Company to have a closer relationship with the Apprentices offering guidance, extra tuition if required and the opportunity to discuss personal issues with their Mentor, as well as assessing individuals for future promotion and personal development to groom for promotion.
