McGill were appointed Principal Contractor on a Community Energy Savings Project (CESP) in the Hilltown area of Dundee by Dundee City Council.
In conjunction with British Gas the four blocks of flats were given new energy efficient heating, external insulation and new cladding with CESP Funding, in order to improve energy efficient standards and reduce fuel bills.
McGill were employed under a Design & Build Contract to construct and fit-out one Energy Centre to provide the source of supply for LTHW & DHW Heating to replace the existing electric heating to the 336 flats in the four blocks.
The Services in the energy centre consisted of gas fired boilers, pressurisation unit, pumps, sidesteam filtration units, interconnecting pipework and BEMS controls. To reduce installation time on site, the pipework was pre-fabricated off site in McGill’s workshop.
From the energy centre, underground pre-insulated pipework was installed and connected to carbon steel pipework installed vertically and horizontally in each multi storey block, terminating at the Heat Interface Unit in each flat.
Only after the energy centres were tested and commissioned, and heat was available at the HIU did work commence associated with renewing the heating system in each flat. This method of working meant that the tenant was never without heating or hot water as the works were completed in one day.
Replacement kitchens & bathroom were carried out in each of the 336 apartments. This project valued at £3.2m was completed in July 2012.Back to Case Studies
