Our history

From McGill to The McGill Group

McGill was founded in 1981, and has been delivering for customers across Scotland ever since. With a Scotland-wide footprint and an all-trades approach, McGill has spent the last four decades building a strong reputation as an all-trades contractor which consistently delivers high quality work.

In February 2019, McGill entered administration after a few years of difficult trading conditions. United Capital, an investment company in the construction and facilities management sector, quickly became KPMG’s preferred bidder, and officially acquired the company in March of that same year.

United Capital set to work quickly righting the direction of McGill, putting in place the right leaders to set the strategic direction and drive business growth. With a continued focus on social value, an early priority for McGill was to become a living wage employer, cementing its reputation as a company working with and for the community.

With a strong leadership team in place, McGill has now become The McGill Group, with a number of strategic acquisitions taking place in 2021, designed to strengthen the number of operatives, breadth of skills, and geographical footprint. With a growing portfolio of exciting projects right across the country, and a thriving apprenticeship programme, McGill is focused on constructing the future together with clients old and new.

Alliance Electrical Services

Shortly after acquiring McGill, United Capital brought Angus-based company Alliance Electrical Services into the growing group. Founded in 1995, AES was a thriving company with a reputation as trusted electrical contractors and renewables experts. The company had a Fire and Security Division, Renewables Division, and Plumbing and Heating Division.

McGill and AES began to collaborate on a range of contracts and projects, and it soon became clear that the two companies could together form a strong and stable contractor. In early 2021, Alliance Electrical Services merged with McGill to form a mid-tier contractor with a reputation for excellence and a broad range of trades delivered in-house.

The McDougall Group

The McDougall Group was formed in 1973 as McDougall & Partner, a general building contractor carrying out a variety of works for local councils.  Since then they have specialised in the delivery of reactive repairs and void works to social housing providers, with a commitment to deliver complete peace of mind and build long-term relationships with customers. The McDougall Group services more than 20,000 households across Scotland.

In August 2021, The McDougall Group was acquired by McGill, in a deal which saw all 65 highly skilled employees remain in position, and which supported the continued growth of the McGill group, providing much in-demand labour to the business.

Kingdom Gas Services

Kingdom Gas Services was formed by Founder Billy McCord in 1998. With a team of skilled engineers engineers providing the complete range of gas heating products and services to housing associations and councils, the company quickly built a reputation for delivering quality work and first-class customer service. The company soon grew its footprint to cover the East Coast of Scotland, from Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Fife and Edinburgh.

Kingdom Gas Services was acquired by McGill in September 2021. Its team of dedicated engineers will form McGill’s new Gas Division, headed by Kingdom Founder Billy McCord, who will be in position as Gas Services Director.
