A year of change it has been for all at McGill, and that’s going to take us to some exciting new places. But first, let’s go back to the beginning of the year for a minute: the country was in lockdown, building sites were closed to everything but essential work, many employees were on furlough, and the economic predictions for the building services industry were dire across the board.

I joined the company in March, and in the following weeks we brought all staff back from furlough and kicked off contracts that had been waiting to begin. That’s not all we did though: in that first quarter of the year we also took stock of the business as a whole, as all smart organisations who found themselves with unexpected downtime should have done (and by the way, now you can separate the ones that did the work from those that didn’t in a heartbeat).

Driving ahead as part of United Capital

As part of our strategic review we decided to do two things: work on building a stronger company culture, and pivot the business to focus on sustainability. Being part of the United Capital group has been of huge benefit to McGill in regard to both of those; we’re working on our culture with initiatives such as a new company news app in Engage4, and the Race to Dubai Employee of the Year Award.

Decarbonisation is the key

It has also helped shape the sustainable future of McGill, as the entire group embraces its position as experts in decarbonisation of the existing built environment. Our reputation as sustainability and renewables experts has continued to grow throughout the year, and our hugely experienced Eco Division is currently working on a number of air source heat pump and solar panel installation contracts.

As if that wasn’t enough, we also worked flat out to fill our pipeline for 2022 and beyond, and we’ve done an admirable job as a team. We’re partnering with almost 30 housing associations right across the country, we’ve got a secure pipeline of work for the next two years, and we’ve been appointed to a number of multi-million pound frameworks. We also made two strategic acquisitions in The McDougall Group and Kingdom Gas Services, doubling our workforce and broadening the depth and breadth of our customer offering.

No winter shutdown for McGill

We’re ending the year on a high, and while some of our competitors look to quieten down over the winter period, I can genuinely say that McGill is only really getting started. 2022 is already set to be hugely successful, we’re looking to increase our already-doubled workforce, and we’re set up as the sustainability partner to new and existing customers everywhere. What else could you want on your Christmas list?

One last thing before I finish: to everyone at McGill who has been part of this year’s rollercoaster, I want to say a massive thank you. The energy and teamwork shown by you has blown me away time and again. Take the time now to enjoy the festive period with your loved ones, then let’s pull together to make 2022 an even bigger year for McGill.
